A pot used to preserve water.

Historically, pottery has been a help tool for our forefathers. History has it that as time keeps changing; the human had to find new ways of doing things. In the past, humans did not have these cooking utensils which include the bowls, saucepans, spoon, among others. There was therefore the need for mankind to find a way of storing food and water and probably other uses.

Mankind began to wonder about how to make utensils and storage products for their use. Mankind then thought of using clay to manufacture product, hence the need for pottery. This was what brought about the introduction of the pottery industry.

According to the pottery center at the 'arts center' in Accra, the nascent of the pottery industry happens to be a very fascinating story. Potterywares which include earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain have all undergone significant manufacturing changes.

History has it that mankind during those times (in the past) thought of using clay to produce what they want and how they want it. They mold a ball of clay out of which water has been taken from and they used their thumb to press on and in it until they get it as deep as they want it. Men and women of the past used stones to shape the pottery wares in their own likeness.

Over the years, pottery wares have undergone a number of manufacturing advancement based on new technologies and ideas. Pottery wares are still very important in spite of their replacement by Western –American products. Increasingly, pottery ware has undergone some challenges but has been able to pass through. Let us all help maintain this legacy.
